Introduction to Science and Technology Education at Shanghai High School

2024-09-25

As one of the first batch of demonstration schools featuring science and technology eductaion during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the combining curriculum system of Shanghai High School focuses on and highlights the following aspects of science and technology education.

Shanghai High School collaborates with leading universities and research institutes in relevant fields to set up 11 experimental groups in areas such as intelligent vehicles, human medical science, finance, law, micro-films, hosting and public speaking, software engineering, 3D printing, drones, digital geography, and brain science. Each semester, nearly 200 elective courses are offered, including subjects like "Brain Science and Artificial Intelligence" and "Simulated Aircraft Piloting" for students to choose from.

In terms of specialized science and technology course development, Shanghai High School pioneered a science experimental class in 2008 towards five specialized fields: physics, chemistry, life science, computer science, and medicine. In 2011, an engineering experimental class was added, offering five specialized fields including engineering (comprising intelligent engineering and civil engineering), communications, oceanography, energy sources, and the environment. In 2018, brain science and artificial intelligence, as well as social sciences, were added to the list. The content difficulty of these specialized courses equals or is slightly higher than the pre-university studies. The courses are primarily taught and guided by experts from universities and research institutes. Each student is required to focus on a research topic in one field under the guidance of experts both inside and outside the school, lasting one and a half years.

Shanghai High School's science and technology education activities adopt a strategy that highlights key areas whilst covering all aspects. With the school’s comprehensive advancement of science and technology education activities, the cultivation of scientific spirits (including rational thinking, critical questioning, and the courage to explore) among students are emphasized. Major annual events primarily include the Science and Technology Festival and the "SHS Cup" Science and Technology Forum. The Science and Technology Festival is held annually in April and May, lasting approximately three weeks. Traditional events include "Firm Construction/Weight-bearing Bridges," "Evolution: Science Innovation Competition," "Mind OM," and "Robotics Comprehensive Competition". The "SHS Cup" Science and Technology Forum has become a cradle for cultivating technological innovation among students in Xuhui District, providing a platform for students passionate about technological innovation to explore, innovate, and grow. In various levels of science and technology innovation competitions, students from Shanghai High School have achieved remarkable results. In the past five years, they have won over 200 awards at the Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Innovation Contest and more than 30 awards in the Shanghai Future Technology Star Selection activities.
