Inter-school Debate Competition at SHSID

2018-11-26

On December 6th, around 140 debaters and teachers from four international schools: SHSID, Dulwich, Concordia, and SMIC met in XianMian Building to engage in the first round of this year’s debate competition.

The event began at 6PM with a brief 20-minute orientation and briefing. The first round began at 6:30 PM, and the second round began at 7:20.

The results - the 7 Senior division teams managed 5 wins 3 losses against the other schools (one team debated twice), and won 4 “Best Overall Debater” awards. Even though the Junior division only had 5 teams from SHSID and it was the first time they participated this competition, these teams still managed to win 4 “Best Overall Debater” awards. Mr. Lu, the supervisor of the school's senior debate club was proud of the performance of the debaters and the organization work of the club members.

The event ran fairly smoothly at that night. According to the feedbacks from the other school's leading teacher, it was a 'Great event as well as a strong learning moment for all students.' And they also appraised that SHSID makes a positive difference to the tradition of the inter-school debate event.

However, there was still room for improvement in backup plans and staff training. Just minutes before the competition, several debate teams had last-minute changes to their lineups, resulting in some last-minute changes to the matchups and some confusion among the debaters and debate hosts.
