STEM Program "Interesting Physics Experiments" Completion Competition Held

2024-12-31

At noon on December 27, 2024, the "Interesting Physics Experiments" final performance competition of the STEM program of Shanghai Middle School was held in the lecture hall of Zhentao Building. The competition was modeled after the International Young Physicists Competition (IYPT), in which four groups of students acted as pro, con, critics and observers, and gave academic presentations and discussions on the topics of "Rayleigh Bernard Convection" and "Latolato".

The difficulty of the competition questions was a great challenge to the students. During the course, each group of students kept searching for information, learning theories and optimizing the experiments again and again. The happiest moments were when we saw students actively practicing the cases in the textbook until they were able to realize the simulation of their own topics; students came to the lab after school to analyze the motion law of Latolato, and they were still working on the data until the evening study. In the performance competition, when each student reported, the students in the same group were nervously supplementing the content of the PPT and actively organizing their points of view.A semester course brings not only a research experience on physics problems, but also an unforgettable memory of teamwork.

The course "Interesting Physics Experiments" was first offered in September 2024 and was developed and taught by Ms. Jianli Xu and Ms. Lin Cheng. The course uses SYPT questions as "real problems" and is implemented with the support of lab teachers in the Physics Lab, Chemistry Lab, Biology Lab, and Intelligent Engineering Lab, including Yifeng Liu, Mengxin Li, Long Cheng, Yiyan Cai, and Yan Fan, as well as Mr. Chengcheng Shi from the International Department's Physics and Engineering Labs.

Students interested in physics are welcome to take up the challenge.
